How to reach the Hispanic/Latino population in Austin?

In 2009, United Way Capital Area developed a study on the Latino Community in the Greater Austin area, called “Making the Connection”. GAHCC presents some of the interesting findings of this study:

•Many people believe that education is the key to advancing Hispanics/Latinos at all levels of leadership, business and professional development, including skilled workers.

•Since family is such a key influencer for Hispanics/Latinos, strategies to change community conditions should include tools and resources for parents and families.

•Public schools are uniquely positioned to connect with the Hispanic/Latino communities in Austin, since most Hispanic families send their children to public schools. To better reach Hispanic parents, schools must consider non-traditional ways of communication, such as home visits and neighborhood outreach.

•Religious institutions are a good source for community education and outreach efforts since Hispanics/Latinos hold strong affinities to religious communities.

•Technology is an effective tool to reach many Hispanic/Latino individuals, but not all have access to it and regularly use the internet stated. Organizations should integrate a variety of communication channels into any communications strategy in order to reach all members of the community.
