    Boys and Girls Club

    Dennis, a senior at our Ann Richards Girls Club, has recently finished applying to eight colleges.  Her top choices are Harvard and Yale.  Dennis is fervent in her commitment to attend an Ivy League school.  Dennis plans to become a politician and double major in Political Science and Communications.  Currently, Dennis’ family is not living in the same
      place.  As Dennis’ mom works to make enough money so that she can provide a living space to all of her kids, Dennis lives with her sister, a student at the University of Texas.  Dennis is so driven that for a while she was waking up at 4 am to go to McDonalds to do her homework as her house was without electricity.  Dennis is a dynamic speaker and a talented young lady. She is our 2015 Youth of the Year and recipient of the $5,000 scholarship.  Congratulations Dennis!  Maricela Casados, soon to be mom and Club Director, along with Rachel Stewart ARS Girls Club Education Director, worked with Dennis on her application and packet.  Thank you Maricela and Rachel!

    Launch Pad

    --LaunchPad’s (“LP”) core mission is reaching disadvantaged students in the Austin inner-city community that are at academic crossroads due to at-risk behavior. LP has three core programs:  After School Program, Parent Engagement, and Community Impact. LP currently serves 130 students and their families per week.  LP’s After School Program is based at Dobie Middle School in Northeast Rundberg. Ninety percent (90%) of the students in this
      community are considered disadvantaged; seventy percent (70%) are considered at-risk. LP provides mentoring, character education, leadership, life skills, and drug-free living programs for students who would otherwise not have a structured place to go to after school. The Parent and Community Impact component serves the students’ parents and families with focus on core parenting education and engagement.  LP has recently partnered with the UT School of Social Work and APD, with support from AISD and area Charter schools, to create an educational advancement district called R.E.A.D. (Rundberg.Educational.Advancement.District). Through this new partnership, LP will provide additional Parent Engagement Workshops, which will assist economically disadvantaged families learn how to: budget; grocery shop for better nutrition; communicate more effectively with their children, and create healthy home environments. LP has also recently been asked by the APD to serve as the City’s “Hispanic Liaison Representative” for the City’s Restore Rundberg Initiative.

    Mexic Arte

    Since its inception in 1984, Mexic-Arte Museum has been a pioneer institution in the museum field as one of the few Mexican and Mexican-American art museums in the U.S. The Museum contributes to cultural enrichment and works to improve the quality of life through innovative exhibitions and educational programming. The 78th Legislature of Texas designated the Museum as “The Official Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas,” a distinction that aided the Museum in forming agreements and partnerships with the Mexican government’s National Council of the Arts and Culture. This partnership generated a long-term loan agreement with Mexico’s national museums.  Mexic-Arte Museum has produced and presented exceptional artistic/cultural exhibitions and educational programs and has received local, state and
      international recognition for its contributions.  Hundreds of diverse families, artists, scholars and corporations, businesses, and organizations enjoy Mexic-Arte Museum as part of the cultural fabric in downtown Austin.  Annual city and state wide cultural events, as in Viva la Vida/Dia de los Muertos, Young Latino Artists and other outstanding exhibits have become part of Austin’s downtown traditions.  Each year, the Museum presents audiences with exceptional exhibitions, public lectures, art events and educational programs. In addition, the Museum has been consistently recognized for providing underserved youth with innovative art education programs that assist in building individual and collective pride, self-esteem, and self-expression.  The Museum also provides unique opportunities for college students to work and learn as docents, interns, volunteers and mentors.  This year Mexic-Arte Museum is celebrating its 30th Anniversary.

    Daniela Ariza was born in Guanajuato, Mexico.  Her first business was a fashion clothing store that she ran out of her home in Juventino Rosas, Guanajuato.  Now in the United States, Ariza has spent the last three years perfecting recipes for gourmet, homemade, organic, traditional Mexican candies made from various ingredients such: peanuts, coconut, amaranth, etc…  Ariza holds a manager certificate for food service and maintains high quality products. Ariza aspires to create a Confectionery where every product is a work of art, and bring it to a national market.
