Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) Board of Directors Application

The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) is required each year to call for new board member submissions. The Hispanic Chamber Nominations Committee is currently seeking qualified candidates to serve on the 2019 Board of Directors. Board members of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce contribute to the advancement of our economic development mission and strategic goals to support small businesses in Austin and Central Texas. In addition, they assist the Hispanic Chamber with membership recruitment and retention efforts; support the Chamber’s special events through committee participation, fundraising, sponsorship and attendance; and attend regularly scheduled board meetings. Applicants must be members of the Hispanic Chamber in good standing.  If you would like to nominate yourself or an individual to serve on the board, please submit a letter of interest along with a copy of your resume no later than Friday, November 2, 2018.


Established in 1973, the mission of the GAHCC is to increase its members’ personal, business, educational and financial wealth.  The GAHCC vision is to be the Center of Excellence for businesses and entrepreneurs in the Central Texas Hispanic market.

GAHCC Board core values:

  • Duty of care: Board members are expected to actively participate in organizational planning and decision-making and to make sound and informed judgments.
  • Duty of loyalty: When acting on behalf of the organization, board members must put the interests of the nonprofit before any personal or professional concerns and avoid potential conflicts of interest.
  • Duty of obedience: Board members must ensure that the organization complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and that it remains committed to its established mission.
  • In addition to its legal responsibilities, the board acts in a fiduciary role by maintaining oversight of the nonprofit's finances. Board members must evaluate financial policies, approve annual budgets, and review periodic financial reports to ensure that the organization has the necessary resources to carry out its mission and remains accountable to its donors and the general public.

GAHCC Board Commitments:

  1. Support of the GAHCC Vision and Mission
  2. Central Texas-based
  3. Time and financial obligations (membership recruitment, sponsorship sales and/or personal contributions)
  4. Leadership and service on committees

Must be a current and active dues paying member of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Regarding representation from business owners, professionals, and executives from the community, the following are of particular interest in terms of expertise:

  • Economic Development
  • Digital/Modern Sales (membership)
  • Hispanic Business Research
  • Marketing/Communications
  • Advocacy
  • Education

The following responsibilities & goals are expected of board members:


-Actively serve on at least one committee and attend at least 75% of committee meetings.

-Attend Board or Board/Staff planning retreat, training or teambuilding functions (usually 1-2 per year, often in conjunction with a board meeting).

-Attend a majority of the approximately twelve board meetings per year. Per by-laws, any Director who misses (2) consecutive meetings of the Board will be contacted by the Chairperson of his/her possible removal and resignation from the Board.

-Stay informed, ask questions, and request information, taking responsibility for making decisions on issues, policies and other board matters.

- Maintain in strict confidence any GAHCC member information shared with me as part of my

board service, including not limited to,  maintaining the confidentiality of member lists and not using any such lists or any other GAHCC information for my own personal use and benefit.

Give-or-Get Contribution:

$5,000 requirement achieved by any combination of the following (in supporting the achievement of GAHCC’s overall development goals):

  • Recruiting/referring new corporate or small business revenue
  • Making an annual personal gift
  • Sponsoring GAHCC initiatives
  • Membership/renewal dues


Exceeding the $5000 goal is welcomed.


A board member term is 2 years with a 6 year maximum service.
