An Overview of Our Community

The Greater Austin metropolitan area is composed of Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties. This area includes the following cities: Austin, Bastrop, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Lakeway, Leander, Lockhart, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Marcos, and Taylor, among others.

Our city enjoys a privileged spot in the heart of the Central Texas Region. It is located less than three hours away from three of the nation’s largest cities: San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. Austin is also four hours away from Laredo, the main port of entry between Mexico and the U.S.

Austin is known as the Silicon Hills, for its robust high-tech industry. The city has a particular focus on the following industries: green industries (solar, wind power, fuel cells, biomass and geothermal resources, biofuels and sustainable energy-saving technologies); health care and life sciences (health care providers, biotechnology, scientific research and testing, and manufacturing of medical devices and pharmaceutical products); corporate and professional operations; convergent technologies (hardware manufacturers, software developers and technology service providers); and creative industries (digital media, music and motion pictures).

If you are considering starting a business in Austin, you should know that Austin is the capital of the most business-friendly state in the United States. There is a low cost associated with doing business in Texas. The state does not collect personal nor corporate income tax, and prices of residential and commercial properties are below those in other major metropolitan areas.

As the largest minority group in the area, Hispanic influence is apparent in areas like food, music, art and film. The growing Hispanic entrepreneurial class has a positive impact on the region’s economy, and an increasing number of Hispanic students enroll in colleges and universities every year, adding to Austin’s talented workforce.
