¡Bienvenidos Tesla! The GAHCC Welcomes Tesla to Austin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TEXAS  – Today, CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla has selected Travis County as the future home of a $1.1B, 4 million square foot manufacturing facility on a site off the State Highway 130 toll road near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Under an agreement made on Tuesday July 14, 2020, Tesla committed to aid our community by employing Travis County locals with an estimated 5,000 jobs -- half of the employment opportunities will be solely available to residents of Travis County and the starting wage of $15 an hour for employees will continue to increase over time. Additionally, Tesla will contribute their savings on tax breaks to local nonprofits and schools.

With Tesla in Austin, our economy will see an immediate gain in business opportunities as well as long-term benefits to our economy. The types of jobs our region will see, span across construction, engineering, manufacturing, operations, facilities, information technology, design, and supply chain.

“As a minority-majority company, Tesla understands that diverse teams and ideas are required to build innovative products. In addition to hiring a diverse workforce, Tesla is committed to regional diversity & inclusion as there will be ongoing opportunities for economic participation for our local Hispanic owned businesses and other minority owned businesses,” said Thomas Miranda, GAHCC Interim President & CEO.

In addition to good paying jobs, the $1.1 billion project will help develop the region’s workforce through its targeted training and apprenticeship programs which include careers in robotics, science, technology, engineering and math. Aside from the broader billion dollar economic impact, analysis shows that Travis County will earn approximately $9 million in tax revenue as a result of this investment.

“The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and its members stand ready to partner with Tesla in achieving their diversity goals,” said Miranda.
